The Sparta Summer Concert Series is thrilled to present Cassidy And The Music this Friday evening August 14th in a free performance at Dykstra Park. She plans to present a “socially responsible” dance party in her return to Sparta. Cassidy Catanzaro grew up in Sparta and went to Sparta High School. Many will remember her as the front woman for the rock group Antigone Rising. In this stressful and disorienting time, she is excited to play some good music and be part of a night out for music starved fans. “It’s going to be so fun. The musicians are killer and we’ve selected the best set possible”.
Now living in Saratoga Springs, NY, Cassidy started her career by heading from Sussex County to NYC. She was the lead singer and primary songwriter for the all-female band Antigone Rising during the early 2000’s. They opened for The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Steve Perry and The Allman Brothers. The group’s debut “From The Ground Up” sold over a million copies.
Cassidy left the band in 2008 to pursue acting as well as her own music in L.A. She has released three solo records, performed in the world symphony tour “Women Rock”, written a song for Demi Lovato’s Grammy nominated “Confident” album, appeared in TV ads and starred in the multi-media show “Parallel Worlds”. She’ll star in the movie version of the show which is filming this fall, “a paranormal romantic drama with an original rock score”. And now she’s even writing a book. “The book is about my experience in the band with stories of my childhood woven through. I’d say it’s Holden Caulfield meets Courtney Love, with a pinch of Mommy Dearest ”.
The singer/songwriter has been very busy in recent years, but these last months of lockdown have been trying. “Well I won’t lie, it’s been tough. Thankfully I’m in great health and I have lots of amazing people in my life to Zoom with. It’s been taxing emotionally and catastrophic financially. My entire industry has been decimated. But I take it a day at a time and remain grateful because I have more than most. I stay creative. I started a podcast called ‘Happy Hour with Cassidy’. I cook, I paint, do yoga, and walk my dog a lot. You gotta keep on going!”
Kicking the show off is an acoustic folk and blues duo from NY and NJ, The Steam Drill Meddlers. They’ll be performing their catalog of songs written by Dan Haggerty, who sings and plays a fingerpicking style Martin guitar. His partner Tony Sky plays harmonica and sings. The group has been recording and gigging for two years. Sitting in and providing a backbeat is Anthony Scalera on the Cajon.
The FREE concert begins at 7PM at The Nicholson Pavilion in Dykstra Park, 22 Woodport Road, Sparta. Bring family and friends, lawn chairs and your picnic. Protocols for social distancing and the safety of the public will be strictly enforced. All attendees are asked to stay with their groups. All are asked to wear masks when entering and when walking around for any reason. Each group will be asked to provide contact tracing information. In the case of inclement weather, the show will be held on Saturday August 15th . Please visit www.spartaarts.org or Sparta Arts @ Facebook for additional information and updates.
